Okay...I think I'll go with number four.
Hmmmm, that's funny...number four.
What could be so significant about that?

Well, it just so happens we're expecting baby number four.
Yup, there ya go.
I just said it.
No wittiness, no riddles to solve, no creative inscription in the snow.
Just blunt, pregnant little me...telling all of you the happy news.

Come May, we will be parents of four.
Four blessings...four miracles...four little people that we get to call our children.
We are very thankful.

And so looking forward to meeting number four.

(Warning: Long sappy post ahead. But the story must be told.) :o)

After 12 years of incredible surprises, epic adventures and romantic outings, you'd think I would get better at figuring it out. You'd think I would know my husband so well that I can tell exactly what he is thinking, even if he is trying to surprise me.

Nope.
Still can't.
He can still TOTALLY surprise me.
And I love it.

Thursday night we headed out for our 36 hours of child-free 10th anniversary celebrating "vacation". Blessed by family who took care of our children, then by friends who had a lovely place for us to stay...we were pumped to just be together, celebrating all the Lord has done these past 10 years!
As we are getting ready to leave the house to head to dinner, Josh nonchalantly asks if I want to go on a little hike up Eagle Rock.

"You know, catch the sunset. You're always wanting to go hike. Let's do it. We'll grab a late dinner."
I say I'm feeling a little tired, but after thinking about it for a very short time, I say "Let's go!"

Eagle Rock is a special place for us, because 11 years ago, in that exact place is where this man told me he loved me and presented me with a pearl necklace from Hawaii that he had bought at the age of 16. He had saved the necklace to give it to his future wife someday.

Yes. He did. He really bought it at age 16 and saved it for 7 years until he met me. True story.

So 11 years ago we had hiked up this same mountain and as we had ventured through the woods, I was directed to follow a trail of red roses all the way to the summit. This led to a wonderful picnic on a breathtaking precipice, overlooking the city.

There were candles lit, music playing, and food waiting. The necklace was presented. The story told. And "I love you" was said for the very first time.

Be still my heart you say? But wait, there's more.

Jump ahead with me 11 years to now. An impromptu hike to find the old place we had once been. To remember all the Lord has done and thank Him for his goodness. He lets me lead a while, "which way is it again?", he says.

I boldly walk on and as we summit the mountain, the sun drops behind the hills and the view is breathtaking. "Let's see if we can find our old spot," I say. So I turn the corner and tucked there in the rock, I see:

Candles lit, music playing and food waiting.
Except this time, a 10th anniversary ring was presented and "I love you" was said over and over.

What can I say, the man is amazing. And super huge thanks to some awesome friends, who helped him pull it off, then hiked in to bring us some incredible homemade dessert. The night was a blast.
And I was totally and completely surprised...

Again.

Life-changing is the only way to describe it.
Incredible.
Miraculous.

Beautiful.
The birth of our first child...

Ella Mae.

It happened today, 6 years ago...at 6:06pm. :o)
Her first cries were sweet sounds to us both.
She was finally here.
And we would never be the same.

In celebration, we had a wonderful day full of friends, family and yummy food...

best big sister...

"cream & sugar yes..."

"chai tea please", she said confidently...

daddy...

she called him her "prince"...

that smile...

laughing at daddy...

our "little" girl...

Today my darling turns 32.
Last year I wrote this lovely little tribute to him.
And it's all still true...but even more so as I've grown more in love with him this past year.

This morning, the kids "surprised" him with breakfast & presents to start his day right!
I took them shopping at the dollar store on Tuesday, then they wrapped their own presents & made the plan for his birthday breakfast. They were soooo excited!

Another day in the life of Ella Mae...

At Children's today...

I continue to be amazed at the little bundle of 5 1/2 year old goodness, namely Ella Mae, that the Lord has blessed our family with.

Over the past couple weeks, we have witnessed her little light shining so brightly, that we cannot even keep up. :o) So for those of you who haven't heard, here's the latest in the life of Ella. Or shall we say, just another day in the amazing life of Ella Mae...

1. She gets to meet & hang out with Mark Driscoll...she loves him, he is moved by her...resulting in his posts about her on facebook (which are commented on by 100+ people, most who don't even know her) as well as his joyful mention of her in his sermon the next day.

2. As a result of her little "debut" via Pastor Mark's sermon, people are encouraged, convicted & touched. She gets invited by a ballerina at the Pacific NW Ballet to come to a performance in June, complete with backstage passes & a chance to meet all the ballerinas. (For as many of you know, ballerinas are her very favorite thing right now!)

3. As a thank you for this wonderful gift, her daddy writes a note to Pastor Mark to tell him (in Ella's words) how excited she was about the whole thing...which in turn was posted here and encouraged even more people.

And now if you ask her, she will tell you she is definitely buddies with Pastor Mark. :o)

4. Just this past week, she got to attend a baby shower for her awesome Auntie...and during the open prayer time she decided to pray for her Auntie & soon-to-arrive baby boy cousin. Her little voice sincerely & sweetly prayed out with full confidence...prayers for her Auntie who she "just loves so much" and prayers for her little cousin Niyah, "that she won't be scared when mommy goes to have the baby and that she won't cry when Auntie has to take care of the baby".

She is absolutely blossoming in her little prayer life and she challenges me, her mommy, with her immense faith & unshakable trust in her Creator.

5. And then today...another check-up day at Children's. Old pink cast removed...new PURPLE cast put on.

Two more weeks and she will be done with the whole cast thing.

But here's the amazing thing about this little girl...for 6 weeks she has had this cast on and for 6 weeks we have heard nothing but...

a joyful heart.

No complaining.

No whining.

No self-pity, sob-story, whoa-is-me drama.

Just plain ole' joyful, bubbly, outgoing Ella Mae...like only she can be. Except she just happens to have a cast on. That's all. No big deal Mom.

2 weeks & counting...

Celebrating in the sun...

She will be six in June. Six going on 17.

She is growing, maturing, understanding faster than I can keep up. And I'll admit, I do have times when I wish she would just stay little...

But then I am just too excited to see all that she will become as she grows up.

Because I have a feeling that what we've seen so far is only the beginning.

And I know His plans for her far exceed any I could ever dream or imagine.

And for now, I will just continue to enjoy every day in the life of our precious Ella Mae...

Just wanted to share a little bit of the goodness that I've been blessed by lately...

1. This sermon that is chock-full of heart-stirring, repentance-bringing, gospel-centered goodness on forgiveness...it applies to you, trust me.

2. This upcoming conference that I couldn't be more excited about! In fact, it's happening tomorrow! And I know it too will be chock-full of intense gospel-centered, life-changing, paradigm-shifting teaching. Yes! Bring it on.

3. This child and her new found skill of walking...by herself...with no help, thank you very much.
She is everywhere people...you know, that wonderful pigeon-toed, almost-falling-on-my-nose, stumble-like-I-drank-too-much (milk) kind of walk, that is so incredibly cute? Yup, that's what she's doing....and she usually has this little goofy smile on her face while she does it.

4. The thing in the sky called the sun and the wonderful stuff out in the front of our house called grass...it did survive under all that snow! I am thankful that we are seeing more of both of these lately...my heart, my home and my (really white) skin are ready for spring!

5. This woman and all the joys of living with her (and her family)...her sound counsel, her humility, her desire for the Word, her gracious spirit (especially to live with me and all my family!) and her cute pregnant belly of course! She is such a huge blessing in my life...I get teary just thinking about the day we won't get to live together!

6. This little devotional that I've started using in the mornings with the kids. It's been a wonderful age-appropriate, totally-doable, Christ-centered way to start our day! The kids (and I) are loving it...and the conversations I am having with the kids, while we eat our oatmeal, are awesome. Little hearts learning big truths...there is nothing better. :o)

7. This song, that has been heard around our house as of late. Usually it is being belted by our 5 year old...there is no sweeter sound I tell ya.

7. And last but not least, my amazing and totally trustworthy God...who never dissapoints, never fails, never misses a thing...
Who is molding me and making me into something better for His glory & my good...
Who never fails to encourage and sustain when my feeble mind and heart are discouraged...
Who loves me and saved me not because of any "good" that I have done, but because of His incredible grace. Period. End of story.

And that is the most amazing good of all.

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2: 4-10

Today we are home rejoicing in the safe and uneventful surgery on Ella's left foot. Thank you to the many who sent text messages, email and FB notes to encourage her little heart. She would beam each time she read one and she said it made her feel "so special". She is now in the infamous pink cast (for 8 weeks) and we are adjusting to life with this new, albeit pretty, challenge.

She was, as always,
radiant...
engaging...
respectful...
cooperative...
flexible...
an absolute joy.

She makes being a mommy (and daddy) the best job in the entire world.

We love you Ella Mae and are so proud of you for letting Jesus shine through you to others while you were at Children's. We know this pink cast is not your favorite thing, but we are so thankful for your good attitude and cheerful heart in spite of it.

The prayers of a wife...

And there is no greater help she can offer him than her prayers on
his behalf to the One who alone can provide perfect, sovereign
help.

When the psalmist sings, “I lift my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?” he answers his own
question with the words, “My help comes from the LORD who
made heaven and earth.”

You are not sufficient succor for him. A stronger Hand must come to his aid.
Blessed is the wife who pleads often for this mighty Hand to keep her
husband’s life; who begs for him at the gates of Grace. This is
the sort of woman who fears the LORD, feels her own weakness,
and finds refuge and righteousness in Jesus Christ.

Today I am one.

I love to smile.

I like to "talk" really loud so my big brother & sister can hear me.

I am crawling everywhere and am pulling up on anything that will stay still. Then I like to let go and see how long I can stand. I am getting pretty good at that trick.

I do not like to take steps when mommy is holding my hands, but I do like to push the chair around the room and take steps.

I love taking baths and my body almost shakes with excitement when I hear the water running.

When you say "How big is Amelia?", I like to reach both my hands high up in the air as you say "So big!".

I love my snuggly yellow blanket and my little stuffed sheep. They are my friends when I am sleeping.

I like blueberries, apples, pears, yogurt and pancakes. These are my favorite things to eat right now.

I love to snuggle with mommy, wrestle with daddy, get tickled by Levi and get kissed by Ella Mae.

I am growing bigger everyday.

I love my little life.

Today I am one.

I arrive...

Another Valentine's Day...

So Valentine's day has come and gone...some of you may have seen my post on Facebook about my husband taking me on a 24-hour, kid-free, mini-getaway over the weekend.

Sigh. It went too fast.

And speaking of going way too fast...

10 years ago this month (February 19th to be exact)...this man of my dreams whisked me away on another wonderful 24-hour weekend. Except this time, it was to ask me to marry him.

With a masterfully contrived plan, he managed to surprise me with plane tickets (to fly me from Portland to Wenatchee), with my bags already packed by my roommates, with 2 days off work (approved by my boss)...and then came the extravaganza complete with:

-a beautiful drive into the mountains...

-a double ride on a hidden snowmobile...

-a map for a secret location...

-a bonfire in 5+ feet of snow...

-music playing on a mountaintop...

-delectable food chilling in a snow bank...

-red roses leading me down a beautiful snowy path...

-a breathtaking diamond ring...

-and a mountaintop proposal by a handsome young man on bended knee on a blue-skied, gorgeous February day complete with celebratory gunfire by the "helpers" who watched across the canyon via binoculars. :o)

Yes, that was the day I got engaged.

And the adventures have just kept coming.

Now, 10 years and 3 children later this man of my dreams is still:

leading me...

loving me...

wooing me...

honoring me...

serving me...

desiring me...

praying for me...

listening to me...

and laughing with me.

Another Valentine's Day has come and gone and darling, they just keep getting better.

I love you.

As my guest blogger stated above...the day went really well!

We are very thankful, yet again, for the Lord's goodness displayed
-in our little girl...
-in the doctors & nurses at Children's...
-in His grace for another day to enjoy together as a family...
-in His continued guidance & wisdom in every circumstance...
-in the prayers of His church that sustain & encourage all of our hearts.

The day included MRI with sedation (to check her spine & brain), xrays, talks with her neurosurgeon, spina bifida specialist, and orthopedist. It was full. It was heavy. It always is.

And it was good. No news that we weren't expecting. No devastating diagnosis.
But it was still hard. Still challenges. Still tough to see our little girl dealing with these things.

And yet we are thankful, encouraged and blessed. So thank you for your prayers dear ones...we are so very grateful.

And in Ella's words:
"keep praying for me."

And I am incredibly thankful for the sacrifice of the cross...on my behalf.
Undeserved.

These words washed over me today as I sat and watched a video of hymns with my kids. It's good theology to fill their minds with at this young age. And it's good for mine as well.

Happy New Year from our home to yours...

As I do every year, I'll be setting some goals for myself...my children...my marriage...my soul.
It is always good for me...refreshing, redirecting, refocusing. Exactly what I need!

Blessings to you all...may the Gospel transform you this year and may you rest in the unfailing love of the Savior!

So thankful...

As many of you know, we had an emergent trip to Children's last week.

The only thing I can say is that we are SO incredibly thankful for the grace of the Lord and his provision through doctors, specialists and the faithful prayers of his saints. We were blessed beyond words by the quick notes, texts, emails and messages washing us with the Word to encourage our hearts and strengthen our minds during this ordeal.

Ella awoke Thursday morning after 2 days of very high fever. During the course of the morning (about 30 minutes), she began having what appeared to be a "seizure" with stiffening of both hands, wrists & arms accompanied by headache & neck pain. It was very scary for her (and us). And we were unsure if the stiffening would continue to the rest of her body!

We were unsure if this had something to do with her shunt or scar tissue on her back (tethered cord) or the Chiari II malformation at the base of her skull...the possibilities seemed endless and scary.

After quick & frantic phone calls to our specialists at Children's, we were on our way...fast.

Upon arrival, we were quickly connected with our specialist, Dr. Walker (an incredible doctor & very caring man...we are so thankful for this guy!) who examined Ella for over an hour. During that time, we were able to rule out the worst...but were unable to come up with a final & definitive “diagnosis” or explanation for her symptoms.

We were able to return home that evening...a wonderful homecoming! Levi & Amelia had been graciously cared for by Carey & Tarah (on very short notice!)...and Ella was so happy to be back in her own home.

Ella was amazing...through much poking, prodding, question-asking and testing, she remained collected & cooperative. And so sweet.

What a gift she is to us. And it was in these tense moments that we once again thanked the Lord for her life, her story & the days we get to spend with her.

Busy seasons...

This one was especially applicable to me today...well, everyday for that matter. :o)

Whew! After devotions, exercise, grocery store run, beds made, dishes done, house straightened, laundry underway, Chad homeschooled, soccer carpool completed, editing project for my husband finished—I can finally attempt to write a post
Life is busy!
And it’s not just me. Whether you are a student, holding down a job, or caring for a family—the fall season unfailingly fills our lives with lots to do.
So what does it look like to glorify God in the midst of a busy season?
The first must-have to survive—and even thrive—during busy seasons: humility.
I still remember the wise and helpful counsel my husband CJ shared with me many years ago when I was having one of those “I just can’t get it all done" breakdown crying sessions. When he finally got the chance to speak, he said: “Carolyn, only God completes His to-do list. We are not God. We are finite creatures with serious limitations. Therefore we need to humble ourselves by accepting our limitations and draw upon God’s strength to simply do what we can.” CJ’s advice not only helped me then, but continues to benefit me to this day.
Here are 3 simple ways we can be mindful of our limitations as we make our to-do lists these days:
1.    Separate the-really-do-matter items from the really-don’t-matter items—of course doing the really-do-matter items first.
2.    Simplify the really-do-matter items where possible. (e.g. pizza for dinner or store-bought cookies for entertaining.)
3.    Trust God for all the things on the list that don’t get done.
Let’s honor God by responding to our “endless” list of to-dos with humility—joyfully accepting our limitations and simply doing what we can.

Sound familiar?

Praying you are trusting God today with all things while being diligent with the time you do have...and then humbly accepting when you cannot do it all.

That's what I'm working on today...and everyday. :o)

Change...

And by God's grace, my heart is changing.

The gospel is so foolish (according to my natural wisdom), so scandalous (according to my conscience), and so incredible (according to my timid heart), that it is a daily battle to believe the full scope of it as I should. There is simply no other way to compete with the forebodings of my conscience, the condemning of my heart, and the lies of the world and the Devil than to overwhelm such things with the daily rehearsings of the gospel.

Alot of this has been happening around our home as of late...learning and growing.

Growing in my understanding of grace...

learning how small I really am and how big God and His story really are...

Growing in my knowledge of the glory of God...

and learning that I am NOTHING without Christ.

Not to mention, children growing like weeds...

And doing school, where they aren't the only ones learning!

Kids learning their books of the Bible...

Amelia growing to 18 pounds!

Me growing in my love for my husband...

and learning that unconditional is the only way to love...

Alot of learning and growing...and it makes for a busy, but fruitful season of life.

So my updates may be fewer with more time in between, but know that we are busy growing!

And that's a lot of work!

And that is Ella Mae...

Just a couple weeks ago, Ella had her annual check-up over at Children's Hospital. It is a full schedule of tests, questions, evaluations, more tests and it basically adds up to a lot of people asking a lot of questions and a lot of people poking & proding.

And this goes on for 3 days in a row.

Some kids would end up in a heap of tears, either embarrassed or tired or exhausted.
But Ella was incredible. She continues to amaze us with her engaging personality which seems to thrive in these kind of situations.

At the end of day two we were meeting with her main doctor, Dr. Walker (pictured below) to talk about everything from diet to braces, from shunt function to bathroom stuff, and so on. A new resident was sitting in on our session so she could learn from Dr. Walker. As he reviewed Ella's latest appointments and reports on the computer, the resident tried some small talk with Ella.

Resident: "So how old are you?"
Ella: "I just turned 5. And I got to ride a horse for my birthday!"
R: "Wow! What was the horse's name?"
E: "Freed, it was a girl horse and it was Mr. Grette's horse and he only lets really special people ride her."
R: "Free?"
E: "No, Freed. F-R-E-E-D" (with much emphasis on the D).
R: "Oh, I see."
Dr. Walker with a huge smile on his face: "And that, ladies and gentlemen, is Ella Mae McPherson. If you can't get it right, SHE will set you straight."

We all got a great chuckle as the resident realized what a sharp little lady she was chatting with! :o)

Ella did a wonderful job of being patient, flexible and sweet...which is just what we thought she'd do. Overall, her reports were encouraging. No big surprises and for that we are thankful.
We will continue to stay the course we are on...with some increases in medication and a few adjustments to diet & schedule.

Dr. Ojeman, Pediatric Neurosurgeon. Because of this man and the surgery he performed on Ella when she was only 14 hours old...she is able to walk. Ella loves him.

Once again, we were overwhelmed by the grace of the Lord in our lives. We are so thankful for Ella Mae...her life, her joy, her personality, her challenges, her smile and the numerous gifts the Lord has given her. And as we were surrounded by countless other families with similar and often, heartbreaking stories, we were thankful beyond words for the gift of our daughter.

Our beautiful gift of God...our Ella Mae.

Celebrations...

There has been much celebrating around our house lately...

-there was the 4th of July picnic (that originally started with a couple families, got canceled, but then was back on with 30+ people in attendance!)...

-then there was Niyah Joy's birthday party (my sweet & adorable niece who turned 1 on July 5th...check out the cute party pics on her mommy's blog)...

-then the celebration of good reports at Ella's annual check-ups at Children's (I'll post more on that later)...

-which was followed by my birthday on July 20th (32!!!)...celebrated with a little family party (and yummy food made by my BFF & SIL), a lunch "date" with my favorite grandma and then a surprise over-nighter with my husband (and little Amelia Claire) on Lake Chelan.

Whew...parties, parties, parties. :o)
Each celebration has been a wonderful time of friends, food and rich fellowship. And each instance has been a tangible reminder of the grace of the Lord in my life and the lives of my family...
...feeling blessed tonight and thankful beyond words.

a gracious lady has gone Home...

Our hearts are heavy these days for the Harris family at the homegoing of a dear lady, mentor & friend...

Sono Harris.

We were privileged to be in friendship with her and her husband Greg Harris of Portland. While Josh & I lived in Portland, I was able to join their church for worship on Sundays (while Josh was away). (The Harris' are sometimes best known by their children. Their son Josh Harris is a well-known author as well as the pastor of Covenant Life Church. Their twin sons Alex & Brett are the founders and speakers for The Rebelution conferences and authors of the book, Do Hard Things. These are just 3 of their 7 children.)

She was a woman full of grace. In her speech, her actions, her marriage, her friendships. Although my time to know her was short, she made quite a substantial impact. Each time I was able to speak with her, I came away with a morsel of spiritual wisdom to apply to my life as wife, mother, helpmate to my pastor-husband, friend or follower of Christ.

I had the opportunity to interact with Sono on a few distinct occasions; being in her home, hearing her teach, an email here, a phone call there...

One that truly sticks out was when she spoke at a small monthly women's meeting. We were gathered in the living room and she shared along with 2 others elders' wives. Her topic: joy. More specifically joy in suffering. She encouraged us to fight for joy and said (paraphrase),

"Choose to focus on God as your source of joy by instructing your mind with the truths of God's eternal kingdom. Learn all you can about Him. Call these truths to mind and have joy.
Call these to mind:
1. your great salvation purchased by Jesus Christ on the cross at immeasureable expense to Himself and freely given to you...
2. the security of your eternal soul...
3. specific blessings God has given...
4. the faithfulness of God to His people throughout human history...
5. your incommensurate future (Rev. 21...seeing Him in all His glory & splendor)...
6. the honor of being counted worthy to serve Him and even to suffer for Him...
7. the incomparable beauty of the ways of His kingdom...
Therefore, have joy...a rock-solid joy that outlasts suffering, has scars and sings happy songs with tears."

I am confident that in her final days here on earth, she chose joy.

You can see it in her radiant face.

You can hear it in the testimony of her children.

She was a mentor to me even in her dying.

A woman to be praised, emulated and celebrated.

Thank you Lord for the outpouring of your grace in the life of this woman. She has impacted many for the gospel and suffered well...with much joy.

And now, her joy is complete...for she is with her Savior.

You will be missed.

Another first...

Ella Mae is having so many "firsts" lately.

First Apple Sox game.
First time to ride a horse.
First of our children to reach the "whole hand" age (5).
First lunch out with just her and daddy (Los Camperos!).
First Bluegrass festival.
First piano lesson (don't worry, I'll post some pics soon).

She is growing up so quickly. And I tell you what...some kids would be overwhelmed by all these new things. Some kids might need to slow down the pace a little because the people and new experiences would be too much.

But my daughter is not one of them.

She thrives on this stuff. And expresses it as follows:

-After an evening concert with Grandma, Aunt Tami, & Nana..."It was totally packed...I mean totally. There were people everywhere. It was UN-believable."
-After returning from the Apple Sox game with Grandpa & Papa..."I had a FABulous time." (much emphasis on the FAB-ulous)
-Regarding her lunch with daddy..."The salsa was SO good mom, I ate it all. I mean, every last drop."
-After the Cashmere Bluegrass festival..."The music was amazing. I think I'm going to play the violin next."
-Of her recent piano lesson with her talented Great Aunt Tami..."Aunt Tami says I am an excellent student. I love being a student mom."
-After a very enjoyable first horse ride on sweet Freed, Mr. Grette's horse..."I wasn't sure at first, but then I was like, this is SO fun. I mean, I totally enjoyed it."

Today was yet another first.

First trip to the dentist.
The big treat about this was that she got to have her teeth checked by her Auntie Tarah (at a fabulous place in Wenatchee.)

And what did she have to say about this?

I overheard her as she told her brother all about it..."You don't need to be afraid Levi. They just check on your teeth with this thing called "Mr.Thirsty" and it doesn't hurt at all. And you get to pick a prize when you're done and it was great. Really."

It was great. And so is she.

Tonight I have nothing more to say than, I love 'em.
I am so thankful for my little family (Amelia included, even though she's not pictured...she's still too young to wrestle).

Tonight after daddy got home and we had some yummy dinner (thanks Aunt Tarah), we played outside in the grass.

The evening was perfect.
And my children were having so much fun with their daddy that I ran and got the camera.

And this is what I saw...

I love them dearly.

For the fathers in my life...

Thank you Dad for teaching me how to be creative, how to make the best of any situation and how to think outside the "box" to solve a problem.
Thank you for family prayers, for reading your Bible and for teaching me how to listen to God speak to my heart.
Thank you for sharing your love of family, heritage and memories.
Thank you for singing to me and sharing your love of music.
And thank you for always being ready to go get some ice cream!

Thank you Greg (my father-in-law) for raising your son in such a Godly way, so he could love and lead me as my husband.
Thank you for praying for me and treating me as if I was your own daughter.
Thank you for your encouraging words, shared at opportune times.
And thank you for your selfless servant-hood to our entire family.

Thank you Joshua, my husband, the father of our children, for being the man you were raised to be.
For taking the time to love your children, wrestle with them, pray over them, teach them and disciple them.
Thank you for leading our home and setting the course for our children.
Thank you for loving Christ first and then me.
Thank you for blessing our home with music and sharing the gift with your children.
Thank you for reading the Bible to our children, praying over them and blessing them.
Thank you for leading our family to the cross in times of suffering and for teaching our children that Christ is better than anything.

Okay, okay...so this book wasn't on my reading list.

Well, now it officially is. It's brought conviction with every page...well, almost every paragraph.

We who are believers tend to evaluate our character and conduct relative to the moral culture in which we live. Since we usually live at a higher moral standard than society at large, it is easy for us to feel good about ourselves and to assume that God feels that way also. Carrying the load...

Today I am so very thankful for a gift the Lord gave me many years ago...

My husband.

This weekend, I had a fun road trip where we (me and some girlfriends) got to reminiscing about the days when we met and fell in love with our husbands.

It brought back so many wonderful memories of the man I was privileged to forge a love with so many years ago (make that 10 years!). And it reminded me yet again of how very proud I am of him.
It made me thankful all over again for the way he has lead me in our marriage.
It made me teary as I thought of all the things he has taught me and worked to help me through.
It filled me with joy as I thought of the trials and sufferings we have endured in our married life, only to experience deeper joy in Christ and each other when the trial had ended.

And how vital our personal relationships with Christ are in order to make this wonderful relationship work.

And speaking of my man...He has absolutely hit the ball out of the park recently on the GCC blog. If you are not reading these morsels of insight & truth, you are missing out. Go check it out...be challenged, refreshed, encouraged and motivated.

I know I am.

June 2nd, 2005 is a very special day in the McPherson household...

After spending 3 weeks in Seattle on bedrest (sound familiar?), I went in to have my weekly non-stress test with our high-risk OB...but as we were in the test, I began having more regular contractions. After being checked and found to be dilated to a 3, our OB said, "It's time."

What? Now? Three weeks early?

A phone call to Josh, his 80 mph drive to Seattle and a couple of tests later...our little girl was born.

"Overcomer of many difficulties...gift of God...consecrated to God"

And our lives have never been the same...
Nicknamed Ella Mae ("beautiful, gift of God"), this little baby has grown into a remarkable young lady.
I am honored to be called "mommy".
And cannot imagine life without her.

We are celebrating her 5th birthday this week,
And we are thanking God for 5 incredible years that He has entrusted her to our care. And we ask that He would grant many more.

Who is this little girl becoming? I don't have room nor words that could come close to describing her...

She is a vivacious little lady, equipped with an incredible mind, a beautiful voice and a love for all things yummy.
Her favorite color is purple.
She likes all kinds of animals and is affectionately known in our house as the "bug-killer"and sometimes, the "worm-whisperer".
She loves to read and is quickly learning to do so on her own.
Her ear for music is far beyond her years and she cannot wait to start piano lessons.
She has no fear of any physical endeavor and is a relentless wrestler with daddy.
She is a very verbal encourager to all those around her.
She is incredibly observant.
She has a memory like an elephant...especially for people's names.
She is sweet, loves cuddling and wants to be a "nurse-mommy-music writer-piano player-volleyball coach-singer-ballerina" when she grows up.

Oh, Ella Mae...you are such a beautiful little lady with so many wonderful gifts from the Lord. Your daddy and I are so excited to see what you will grow up to be. We are confident the Lord has incredible plans for your little life...to bring Him glory.
That's why He made you so special...

We love you so very much...our little girl.

A Beautiful Day...

Yesterday, Josh and I had our second "lunch date" since I've been out of the hospital. We started this new thing where I go to his office (or wherever he's studying) and bring him lunch. It's not just a date for us to hang out...it has a deeper purpose.

We use it to discuss calendar, childcare, future plans and more. Sometimes we dream. Or we talk about our children's latest parenting needs. Or we pray. Or we talk about finances. Or we talk about us. But whatever we talk about, we get to sit and look each other in the eye, listening and engaging...without the sweet distraction of our children.

We've tried something like this before, but it was always in the evening, at the end of the day. The problem with that time slot is that usually we are both tired from the day and end up falling asleep before we can even start a discussion!

The problem however wasn't that we didn't want to but that it was the wrong time of day! We figured out that if we used a lunch time during the week, we both felt like we were accomplishing all we needed.

He was in a working-mode and able to put his full mind and attention to discuss the needs at hand. And I felt like it was a treat to be with my husband in the middle of the day, talking about important stuff...minus the kids! And we were both giving each other and our marriage, the quality time it deserved. Not just the leftovers at the end of the day...when we're both exhausted.

So I am very excited. Being a woman who thrives on a plan, these meetings are a boost to my confidence and a vital part of Josh & I staying connected in the midst of busy and full lives.

This would definitely be more difficult however, if it weren't for our current living situation. Auntie Tarah (and occasionally Uncle Mac) have cared for our children in order for these lunch "dates" to happen. And we are very grateful!

So since we just had one of these "dates" yesterday, I thought I would share with you my renewed motivation to stay the course. I come away encouraged in my role, confident in my husband, thankful for my Savior and excited for the days ahead.

It truly was a beautiful day...with many more to come, I pray.

The blessing of family...

Today my sister flew back to Oregon...to resume her busy life as wife, mother of four, social worker, friend. We have been enjoying her company since Saturday.

My kids got some great Aunt Susan time...baking cookies, playing at the park, reading books. And I enjoyed some good "sister time"...having my laundry folded, meals prepared and dishes done. :o) She was a true blessing.
We even got to spend a couple hours in downtown Leavenworth...just the two of us! (Thanks Joshua!)

Thanks again sister for all your help...for making the trip, for leaving your children to come and help with mine, for loving Jesus with all your heart, for being older. :o) I love you! And thank the Lord for your life...

Tough questions & bittersweet good-byes...

Tomorrow we will spend the day remembering Grandma McPherson. Josh's grandma (his father's mother) passed away last weekend, only 5 months after her husband had paved the way.
They are now together in Glory...praising with the saints.
Their recent home-goings have prompted some pretty interesting discussions with our children. They have all sorts of questions and comments regarding these new concepts of heaven, new bodies, cemeteries and why we have to die.

Here's the latest...

-Ella says to me last week after she heard Grandma Mac had passed away, "Mom, what does Jesus look like?" To which I reply that I'm not sure, no one really knows. "I think I should go to heaven in about 2 weeks so I can see Jesus...I am so excited to see Him!"

-Levi says, "Is there hair in heaven?". Not sure what to do with this one... :o)

-Our conversation tonight at bedtime was as follows. I was explaining to both the kids what tomorrow will be like...lunch with family, graveside service, then the funeral/memorial service.
"What's a funeral for, mom?" Ella asks.
To honor Grandma and talk about the wonderful memories we have of her, I say.
"What is the cemetery for?" she wonders.
I explain, with some difficulty, that our bodies get worn out and that when we die, it means our bodies don't work anymore. So we bury those that pass away at cemeteries.
She thinks for a minute and says, "So does Grandma Mac have to come down from heaven to be buried in the cemetery?"
Which leads me to explain that our spirit lives on in heaven with Jesus.
"And God too," Levi chimes in.
And I explain that we will have new and perfect "bodies". No more walkers. No more braces. No more sniffles. No more tears. No more sadness. No more pain. No more...
"Spankings," says Ella with a smile.

"Can I talk to David in heaven," Levi adds. (from David & Goliath)
Yes, I say confidently.
"Will he be old or young?" Levi asks.
I am stumped.

But this I do know...we will be with our Creator in heaven someday. And that will be a most glorious celebration...in our real home.
Sing on Grandma & Grandpa...you have finished your race well. Thank you and we will see you very soon.

"For we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling...so we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord...Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord." 2 Cor. 5:1-2, 6-8

April 29th is a very important day for me

it is my husband's birthday.

Why is he so incredible?

because he knows me better than any other person...

because he makes me laugh like no one else can...

because he has a desire to learn, grow and be mentored...

because he is taller than me... :o)

because he wrestles with, reads to and hugs his kids every day...

because he can play volleyball...
because he prays for me...
because he is vigilant...
because he is a leader...
because his first love is His Savior, and not me...
because he makes me feel like a queen...
because he isn't too proud to apologize...
because he helps me learn...
because he desires whats best for me and the children...
because he can handle a gun...
because he has a brilliant business mind...
because he is passionate and creative...
because he sees what he wants and makes it happen...
because he joys in the success of others...
because he looks me in the eye...
because he allows himself to be used by the Lord to bless His church...
because he can play the piano beautifully...

because he loves me.

I love you Joshua Ryan and thank the Lord for this day you were born...
thank you for your kingdom vision, your constant love and Godly leadership.
You are the world to me.

A mommy moment...

There is a great blog that I often visit that always has Friday Funnies. Well today I am contributing my own "funny" for you to enjoy. But since I'm a busy mommy, it's a Monday (was too busy Friday) funny instead. :o)

A couple weeks ago I was holding down the fort while everyone else was gone. Carey & Tarah were out of town, Josh was at school and Greg & Candy had Marriage Encounter. So I was spending Saturday by myself, with my 3 kids.
We had enjoyed a great day...Saturday morning pancakes, PJ's 'til noon, reading good books and generally having a quiet day at home. I was feeling pretty good at balancing the needs of my 1 month old, 3 year old and 4 year old. Or so I thought...

A little after lunch, I was sitting in the recliner feeding Amelia. Ella & Levi were hanging out on the couch and Ella was playing with a "pet rock" that her pappy had found on a walk. She proceeded to put the dirty thing in her mouth (why? I have no idea.)
This action was quickly followed by a firm reminder that we do not put such things in our mouth (cue the mother line: you might choke on it, it's dirty, we don't do things like that, etc...). To which she replied, "okay mom".
I calmly returned my attention to Amelia and her quiet nursing. Crisis averted, I concluded.
But out of the corner of my eye I notice Ella burying her head in the pillow of the couch, her hands conspicuously close to her mouth. Sure enough, she was putting the rock in her mouth...again.
Only this time she was trying to "hide" it from me...hmmmm. (what exactly goes through childrens' minds when they do things like this?)
It gets worse.
When I asked her if she was putting the rock in her mouth, she calmly said "no".
Yikes. That is not the best choice my daughter has made.
I quickly told her to come to me and the precious rock was confiscated. This prompted a fountain of tears...but not of remorse, only deep sadness that her new favorite thing was taken from her. Thus we were having quite the heart to heart regarding her lack of obedience, her attempt to hide it and then her lie to cover it up. It was deep.

Due to the fountain of tears and my inability to get up, because of the nursing child in my lap, I ask Levi to go across the room and get a couple kleenex for his sister. He heads that way while I return my attention to Ella and the huge heart issues at hand.
But he never makes it. He bursts into tears there by the tissue box. (I'm still not sure why.) I look up at him in disbelief, for his cries have now overpowered his sister.

There he stands on the hardwood floor (thank goodness...) in his little underwear...peeing his pants. He has never done this. He is crying, "It's coming mommy, I can't stop it".
And as I think how hard this situation is going to be to resolve...son with huge puddle on the floor and daughter who just disobeyed, lied and doesn't seem to care that she did...Amelia promptly throws up ALL over me and herself. We aren't talking "spits up", we are talking the real thing.

Thankfully, my first reaction was to start laughing. What can you do? At that point I was sure a meteor was going to fall from the sky. I was thinking...this can't get any worse?!?
And it didn't. Thank goodness.

I told Ella to sit on the couch so we could continue our heart to heart in a second. She continues bawling. I pick up Amelia and hold her in one arm while I go to Levi with a baby wipe, do a quick once over on his little wet legs, pull off his soaked undies and send him to his room to find a new pair. I quickly lay paper towels over his mess and then go to Amelia's room for new clothes for her, then a shirt change for me. I come back into the living room to my crying Ella, where we proceed to have one of the best conversations in a discipline situation, ever. Remorse, forgiveness, understanding. I was a thankful momma.
Hugs, tears and then smiles followed. And I returned to Levi's location to spray down the floor and disinfect the entire area. Meanwhile, Amelia lay happily on the carpet!

Whew. Just a normal mommy moment...the kind that memories are made of. Hope it made you laugh!

Oh, how quickly we forget...

Here's just a real short snippet from my recent readings, "The Hidden Smile of God" by Piper. It is another book from his "the swans are not silent" series highlighting the lives of John Bunyan, William Cowper, and David Brainerd. These books ministered to me deeply while I was in the hospital and I am excited to be reading another. It provides fresh perspective on the "sufferings" of my life, my inadequacy apart from Christ and the call of endurance to the saints.

From Cowper's book, "The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion of the Church of England", he says:

"We are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by faith, and not of our own works or deservings. Wherefore, that we are justified by faith only, is a most wholesome Doctrine, and very full of comfort..."(emphasis mine)

Comfort indeed. For apart from Him, I am nothing and can be nothing. The last couple weeks have given me a whole new perspective on my need for Him.
In many ways during these past few months of recovery, I feel like I have been able to jump out of the gate, so to speak. Get back in the swing. Pick up where I left off. No problem. However, I will admit the last couple weeks have been quite trying. There was something about being in that hospital bed for 40+ days that made me recognize my need for God.

I was helpless.
I was not in control.
I could have despaired.
I needed God.

And He was there.

But now that I am back in full swing as wife, mother, sister-in-law, auntie and daughter-in-law...I am in my element. I just needed to get better. And then, I could competently run my home again. I couldn't wait to get back to my busy life and the many "hats" that I wear everyday. I could do it. I, in my own strength. I can be all things to all the people that need me.

But really, no...I can't.

Father, how quickly I fall back into old habits. Pulling myself up by my bootstraps. Taking pride in my even-keeled personality and ability to be flexible and handle stress.
This is a trap and an excuse for me to be lazy in my priorities and goals. And it's how I get in trouble. And then fall flat on my face.
Thinking I can make it...on my own. And for me, it leads to not spending the time needed in the Word. Not getting on my knees to beg for mercy and ask for help to spend my day for the glory of Christ. Not seeing every moment I spend with my children, every day I enjoy being married to my husband and every second I call Christ my Savior as a display of grace.
Oh, it makes me so mad when I fall back into bad habits. Habits that are sin! Help me Lord...and may I be ever-conscience and comforted by your grace. For it is only by that unfathomable grace that I can make it through each day. I don't deserve it...but I sure need it.

Tools to fight...

This morning, the kids and I began memorizing scripture again. I am afraid we had to take a serious hiatus while I was on bedrest & in the hospital. I missed it and so did they! They were very excited as I wrote out the verse this morning with bright markers (a favorite thing of mine, remember?) and put the paper up on the fridge.
There are obviously so many verses in the Bible to chose from. Where to start? I decided to use the Fighter Verse Program. It is a list of scripture selections designed for weekly memorization. (There's even a website/blog specifically about the Fighter verse for the week and some deeper thoughts.) I believe they were originally from Bethlehem Baptist Church and Pastor John Piper. There are 5 different "sets" of verses, all chosen specifically to encourage the believer to fight for faith, hence their name "Fighter Verses".

We started with Set "A" and I just jumped in on the first one, Deuteronomy 7:9.

We said it 5 times and the kids repeated it after me. Then I would say it and leave a blank for them to fill in. Childrens' minds are incredible. They were both rushing ahead of me after only the 3rd time through. Ella said "Mom, let's do another one!". So I gave in and wrote out another one. :o)

So, the McPherson children are working on these 2 verses this week. With our goal of learning them both before daddy returns from T4G late Thursday night. (Remember how much I like goals!) We'll see how it goes and I'll let you know.

In the meantime, how's your scripture memory bank? Full? Probably not, if you are anything like me. As I heard once from a wise and experienced woman (who had memorized almost half of the Bible), "You just have to start". Even if it's just a short verse. Just start somewhere! Blessings as you fill your mind with tools for the fight!

Today is April 10.
It is a special day.
First of all, today is Grandpa Carey's birthday.
And that is very special.
Also, it is Saturday.
Which is always a plus.
But the reason I think it is really special is because it is my friend Helen's birthday.

You've probably heard me talk about my friend Helen before...
-She's the one that does really cool things with a sewing machine (wish I could do that), making cute aprons right & left. Or wonderful blankets and bedding for my children. She should have an etsy shop (hint, hint Helen!).
-She's the one with the same little red Bible as me. We weren't together when we bought them, but we picked the exact same one. Fun little coincidence.
-She's a real cowgirl. I may be from Texas, but she's actually rode a horse. And not just rode one, she's won trophies because she's so good at it. I just like that about her.
-She's my party-planning-partner.
We love parties...baby showers, women's events, and tea parties for no reason except to get together, eat really yummy food, dress up a little and bless the socks off the person it's for. I don't plan a party without her. Unless the party is for her, of course. And even then, that's really hard for me to do.
-She's a really good and adventurous cook. She's not afraid to try something new...and it always turns out really good!
Some personal favorites of mine are her apricot-sage scones, homemade rustic bread, and lemon meringue pie.
-She's married to my husband's cousin.
So we're not just friends, we're related. Super plus.
-She's a godly woman, striving to serve her husband, train her child (soon to be children plural!) and serve her Lord. She challenges me by her voracious desire to learn, her devotion to serve & bless her husband in every way, her love for Jesus, her humble spirit, and her genuine heart for hospitality.
Recently, it looked as though they were going to have to move out of state. My heart sank. How sad it would be to see my friend move away. But thankfully, it did not have to be so. And I am looking forward to another year filled with fabulous memories with my close friend who still lives close. Yay!

Happy Birthday Helen...I love you my friend. And I thank the Lord for your life today.

I promised some pics from my parents visit a couple weeks ago. We had a wonderful time going on walks, having a picnic, coloring, getting a special haircut from pappy and making yummy treats with grammy. Thank you mom & dad (grammy & pappy to this kids) for sacrificing your spring "breaks" to come and spend time with us. We had a wonderful time and can't wait 'til you come back again!

He is risen indeed!

What a great weekend it has been celebrating the resurrection of our Lord & Savior. We enjoyed a glorious morning of worship with our church family (even though my two oldest had sniffles...bummer. And yes mom, I wore my hat!) followed by a late afternoon celebration at Josh's parents home. We had snow the day before and now the day after, so needless to say, we celebrated indoors! :o)

This year our two oldest were quite interested in the story of the crucifixion and resurrection. We must have read "The day Jesus died" at least 20 times this week. And each time, they sat with eyes wide open, ears fixed...absorbing every detail of the story. Their little minds were churning and working to grasp the concepts...sin, death, consequences, forgiveness, false accusations, sacrifice, Jesus on the cross...for my sins...even the ones I haven't committed yet. Josh & I so enjoyed sitting with our children this week at bedtime, recounting the story of the cross and the joy of redemption. They asked so many good questions...like only a 3 and 4 year old can do.

Levi, after getting in trouble says, "Is Jesus back on the cross now?" Or Ella as she listens to the story, "Why did He have to die Mom?"...and their questions went on and on. As we answered their questions, we were met by solemn and thoughtful faces. Faces that were starting to "get it", as only their young minds can. It was exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. And my heart prayed all the more...for wisdom, for salvation, for the rescuing of their little lives from the bondage of sin.

And on Easter morning, as I walked into their bedroom, I was greeted by two sweet, sleepy, groggy, sniffle-hindered voices saying "Happy Easter Mommy. Jesus is risen!"

Yes, He is. And isn't that wonderful news?!?

Indeed it is.

The Amelia blog?

Well, I am thinking of renaming this "The Amelia Blog"...as her presence has redefined our priorities as of late. :o) I look forward to writing something more substantial soon, but for now you will have to settle for the latest cute pictures of our little Miss.

Here's some highlights and recent events (I'll fill in more later...):
-We are just finishing the week, where we enjoyed a visit from my parents. (...pictures to follow.) We were blessed by the wonderful cooking of my mother and the storytelling of my father...the kids had a great time with Grammy & Pappy.
-I also ventured out to church last weekend for the first time...and it was so good to be back worshiping with our church family. They have blessed us so much during my bedrest and recovery and it was good to see their faces and give thank you hugs.
-And I have started reading again (yay!) and look forward to sharing the things the Lord's been teaching me in this new phase of life...
-And Levi continues to provide countless opportunities to take pictures that are absolutely hilarious and incriminating all at the same time. I love this kid. He makes me smile. In the picture above you are viewing his version of a tool belt. Hmmmm...I think I need to buy him a real one. :o)

3 weeks and counting...

Wow how time flies when you're having fun being mommy of three...

Many of you have been asking for an update...and I must admit, it is just a little harder to sit down with my computer these days. :o)
Instead, I am sitting down with Levi to read a tractor book...or sitting down with Ella to work on writing her name...or sitting down with Amelia to fill her little tummy with food and her mind with sweet singing. I am even sitting down with my husband on the couch to talk about our day or just look dreamily into each others eyes. (the highlight of my day!)

And each of these things wins if I have to chose between them or my computer. It is not a hard choice. :o)

Amelia turned 3 weeks on Wednesday and the time is going too fast. I am enveloped in play times, midnight feedings, paying bills, doing laundry, baking cookies and making forts. And it is all wonderful. I am feeling good physically and thank the Lord for a quick recovery. Each day seems to get a little better.

Much of my fast recovery is thanks to my wonderful S.I.L who continues to bless me with opportunities to nap, hot meals and folding of my laundry (just to name a few). Although you've heard me say it, hear it again, I could not be doing this without her. Thank you Tarah.

As I grow a little stronger and feel a little better every day, I am excited to implement some of the things I learned during my period of "bedresting"...things like managing my mornings, continuing to work on my reading list (remember, just 15 minutes a day...), and staying on task with my list of goals for 2010.

I thank the Lord for His sustaining grace during my time away from my family and now again, for the strength He continues to provide as I am slowly reassuming the role of wife to a fabulous husband, mother to three sweet children, friend to countless giving people and homemaker and manager of the home the Lord has given us.

I have much to be thankful for. Praying you are thankful today too.

2 Weeks...

Well, little Miss Amelia is 2 weeks old today. The time has flown by...and I am so enjoying getting back into life with my little family.
One of the most enjoyable parts of my return home is being able to just be a part of everyday life again. Being able to have conversations with my kids, play pretend prince & princess, sleep in the same bed as my husband, and sit down to eat dinner together as a family...these times have been priceless.

Today, Ella was talking with me about heaven. "I think heaven will smell like pears and strawberries, Mother." Sounds good to me sweetheart.

And the other night, Levi dressed up as "bad-king pharoah/prince-guy/super hero" and ran around the house. This picture will be filed in my "future wedding slide-show" folder. :o)

And then there are the fleeting moments of Miss Amelia's "baby stage". The moments of her sleeping sweetly on daddy's chest...

All of these times, and many more, have been so precious to me over the last couple weeks. I am so thankful for the perspective I have been given during my time away from home...it is a heart full of thankfulness and humility at the blessings and grace that the Lord pours out on our home every day.

And it is an appreciation for the little things, the daily things, the "mundane" things that truly bring such joy.

Thank you Lord for my family...for my husband, my children, my home. And thank you for your Son, your love and your grace. I am truly blessed beyond measure.

Life at home...

Oh, it's good to be home. We are all enjoying readjusting to life together, with the addition of Miss Amelia. And she is a delightful addition at that.

The kids are excelling at big brother and big sister life. They love to take turns holding her and she has already been smothered with hundreds of kisses. As I've returned home and enjoyed "getting to know" my two oldest again...I am surprised at how much they've grown. And how much they've grown up.

They are both huge helpers and want to be involved with little sister's care as much as possible. They are handling the "re-entry" of mom plus new baby sister quite well. I am so proud of them.

And I am so thankful for my husband, in-laws, sister-in-law & brother-in-law's care of our children in my absence. It is evident that they have been nurtured, mentored, trained and loved more than I could ever imagine. Not only have their physical needs been met (eating, sleeping, playing, etc...no small task for a 3 year old and 4 1/2 year old with special needs), but more importantly their emotional and spiritual needs as well.

They are reciting the 10 commandments (not something that I taught them!) and talking about making sure they use the "P" word (patience) as they go through their day. Their little hearts are joyful in play and filled with laughter and songs.

It makes this mommy's heart glad to hear these things. And it makes the job of resuming my beloved role at their mommy and mentor that much easier. I do not have to "make up" for lost time or "retrain" bad habits & attitudes. Instead, I simply get to step back in where I left off...and it's as if I hadn't even left.

So thank you my family (and friends)...who have filled in a hole created by my absence. I am forever indebted to each of you for the selfless investment you have made in my children. This mother's heart is overwhelmed with gratitude.

Heading home...

Amelia & I have had a lovely day. Lots of eating (for her), then sleeping and being just a little more alert each time she is awake. Her eyes do look blue...just like her siblings. We will see if they stay the course or if they join the brown eyed ranks with mama. :o)

Right now, she is sleeping and I am attempting to "pack up" my room. Thankfully Greg & Candy took some stuff home on Wednesday, but there is still much to be gathered. Most of it is evidence of sweet blessings from friends & families...homemade blankets, snacks, journals, great books and clean laundry (thank you grandma!). As I pack, it feels a little sureal that tomorrow we will be heading home!

Home!!! I cannot wait...and cannot believe it's really here.
I can't say that I will miss this place, but I will miss the people. I have enjoyed some wonderful fellowship with many of the nurses here and hope to stay connected with them in some way. Miss Amelia and her journey to get here have made quite an impact on many people...so I hope to return in a couple months just to say hello and show them how much she has grown. (and what I look like when I am standing up!) :o)

Well, I must finish packing my stuff, the little lady is stirring and my time is short. I don't have new pictures from today, but do check out Joshua's blog to see some cute one's from her birth-day. I will post some pictures and possibly video of our family reuniting tomorrow. The kids will have their first look at their new baby sister...should be the kind of stuff memories are made of.

So we have decided on the name...why did it take so long you may ask? Well, one problem was not living in the same house, let alone the same city for the past 2 1/2 months. And then, when it came down to it, we just couldn't seem to pick from so many good options.

But you all will be happy to know that our decision is now final and the results are in:

...so she is "to make famous the work of the Lord"!

You saw her stats and she is doing just excellent. And so is mommy! The day of her birth went so well. Everything from the amnio to the timing of the surgery, from our wonderful anesthesiologist (Dr. John Thomas...you were great!) to my recovery, and everything in between...the whole day went off without a hitch.

We know this was not coincidence...thank you all for your countless prayers. They have proved to be beneficial and have blessed our family immensely.

Miss Amelia is doing quite well. She is nursing very good and has seemed to have caught on even quicker than her siblings (this is a huge praise!). She does not appear to have any jaundice and we continue to watch her daily. Her lungs are working perfectly and she has been able to stay in my room with me since her birth. What a blessing!!!

Her & I are having some great quality time...just the two of us. Just like we have been doing these 2 1/2 long months...except it is much more fun to kiss her little cheeks and look at her tiny face, instead of just feel her kicking inside.
I am so thankful for the immediate bond I feel with this little lady. We are so excited to have her in our growing family and we cannot wait to get home tomorrow (Saturday)...yes, tomorrow!
Thank you again for your overwhelming prayers and concern during this phase of our lives...we are so encouraged to be moving on to the next part of the journey and we cannot even express in words what our thankful & humbled hearts feel about all of you.

Today!!!

Well, the amnio is in and the results are great! They were very pleased with her lung maturity and are anticipated that she'll be breathing quite well when she comes out. This is a huge praise the Lord!

So, the surgery time is set for 11am...less than 30 minutes from now. Josh is fueling up at the coffee stand...and he's having one for me too. :o) And I am resting, waiting in anticipation to head on into the surgical suite.

We will post the update you've all been waiting for as soon as we can after she arrives. I will be in recovery for at least an hour & baby girl will be with daddy for at least that long as well. But we promise to post pics & stats as soon as we're able.

Keep praying saints...we can feel it!

Tomorrow...

Tonight I am excited...of course!

Let's recap: Tomorrow morning at 7 am we will have the amniocentesis to check on the lung maturity of our little lady. The results take about an hour and as long as her little body is ready, we will be added on to the surgery schedule. It could be as early as noon or later, like 4 or 5pm.
Josh will be with me all day and will be updating everyone with the latest. He will post here on my blog and on the City (for our church fam), as soon as we find out when we'll be going in to surgery.

Wow. It seems pretty sureal at this point. Tomorrow we'll have this baby. After all this wait and all the excitement, she will be here.

And despite all the things I will be going through tomorrow to get her here (some of which are not real enjoyable), I am overwhelmed by a great sense of peace & comfort. My sweet sister-in-law came by yesterday and shared some encouraging words:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's suffering, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too...our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort."

2 Corinthians 1: 3-5 & 7 (emphasis mine)

A wonderful exhortation to be comforted by our Lord Jesus! Since He has been faithful every step prior to this, I am confident that He will continue to bring peace and comfort in tomorrow's events.

So, I am heading to bed...my last night with this little lady inside the womb. When she is here and we are able to look at her sweet face, I must admit that I will miss her little kicks & turns inside by tummy. It is one of my favorite experiences to feel a little life growing inside...a miracle, that only a masterful creator could design. And I am thankful & humbled to have experienced it.

We look forward to introducing her to you tomorrow...so stay tuned and please continue your prayers. For safety, joy & comfort as we go through this next phase of the journey and get to meet the little miss.

Can you say 3 days?

We're in the final days...3 to be exact.
And since the Olympics are on, my adrenaline seems to have kicked in. I feel like I am in the final days of prep before a big race. (Once competitive, always competitive...yup, that's me in the picture. I'm the third girl from the left. And those are my GFU hurdle teammates & coach.)

I watched the short track speed skaters last night and found my stomach churning as they prepared to race. I was immediately taken back to my days in track & field. (I started competing when I was 6.)
The moments before the race were always the most nerve-wracking. It was then that I would think of all the training I had done to prepare for this one race. I would visualize my race...the start, every hurdle and myself crossing the finish line in the lead. I had one shot. It was a ton of pressure. But the end result was worth it. To cross the finish line in first place was a fabulous feeling.

So after watching them compete last night, I laid awake in bed for another hour. My old adrenaline had kicked in and I was ready to go out and run. (...although that would have been really funny to see, given my current condition!)

And that is how I am starting to feel about this Wednesday. I feel like I've been in training (funny training though...laying in bed?!?) and have been preparing for this day. Maybe more so mentally. For the surgery itself (the epidural is really not a favorite thing of mine), for the recovery after and for my return home (nights without sleep due to a newborn girl, readjusting to my roles as wife & mother, etc...).

I feel like I am "gearing up" for many things. So many adjustments and changes ahead. And I am so thankful for the mental prep that I have been able to have during these past months.

My mind is not full of fear, but of hope.
I am bolstered by truths I have read about my Lord:

About His sovereign plan...which keeps me from unnecessary worry.
About His steadfast love...which brings me perfect peace.
About His Holy word...which provides constant reassurance.
About His unending grace...which is the only reason I am here today.
About the Holy Spirit...who intercedes when I have no words.
And about His firsthand experience of suffering & pain...which softens my heart & encourages me to endure.

I am getting ready to finish this "race" on Wednesday. For me, this is the best way to view it. I am excited. My adrenaline has started pumping. And my eye is on the goal.

With my Lord by my side, I cannot fail.
And that is even better than Olympic gold.

Reasons for Hope: Number Four

Number four: There is no act of Satan that is not subject to the ultimate power & sovereignty of God.

I listened to a great talk by John Piper the other day called "10 Aspects of God's Sovereignty Over Suffering & Satan's Hand In It". It can also be found in written form, along with many other great articles, in the book "Suffering and the Sovereignty of God".

This article by Piper listed 10 excellent reasons to hope in our sovereign God. Satan is real. And he is a powerful enemy. But the battle and the end result does not belong to him. In fact, his power is always subject to our sovereign God.

There is immense hope in that fact. And the knowledge that our God is greater brings much comfort, even in the midst of suffering. If you have time, download these talks here and enjoy the encouragement that comes from knowing that our powerful God is in control. And ultimately, He is victorious.

"And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth...but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." Revelation 20:9 & 10

Back to my "Reasons to Hope" series...prompted by the story I shared about the woman in the room next to mine. (Each of these reasons coming from some reading or studying I have done as of late...which will soon have to take a temporary backseat to the new little lady on the way!)

Number three: singing hymns and spiritual songs to the Lord is a way for the soul to pray when it has no words of it's own. Hymns can be powerful pieces of theology that can be sung in times of trial, to "preach" to ourselves about the nature of God.

This is an old favorite of mine:

"Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;

One thing I have missed tremendously while being here at the hospital is singing. I have missed worshiping with others at church, singing with my children at home and just humming a hymn as I go through the day. Singing here is a little hard, but when I clicked on the website to find the lyrics for this hymn...I couldn't help but sing along.

The powerful words and strong theology were enough to lift my spirits and encourage my heart. Just another reason to hope.

Little girl...Big plans

Here's the latest updates on our little lady (still in the womb!):

1. We are planning on having an Ultrasound on Monday, Feb. 15th to make sure that all looks well (amniotic fluid, her size, placenta location, etc.)...

2. We will then plan on having an amniocentesis on Wednesday, Feb. 17th to check her lung maturity. If the test comes back showing that her lungs are ready, then they will "add me on" to the surgery schedule for later that afternoon/evening...

3. Sooooo, we will plan on meeting this little lady (finally!) on February, 17th! So let the countdown begin...only 7 more days! :o)

4. And that means, we will plan on bringing her home on Saturday, the 20th or Sunday, the 21st. HOME!!! I cannot wait...

5. That means Josh & I celebrated our last "date night" (in the hospital, that is) last night. It was our best yet. Probably because we are almost done with this season of life! We had a wonderful dinner, laughed a ton (one of the bazillion reasons why I love my husband...he makes me laugh...a lot), and we opened these AMAZING baskets from a bunch of families from our church (more of you than I can count!).

What can we say? Thank you seems so inadequate. We had so much fun opening both baskets...and the diaper bag. I would so like to write you all a thank you note, but don't know where to begin or what is from who?!?

So many cute & thoughtful things...

One of the things I have missed is "nesting"...preparing to bring this little lady home. Things like laying out little onsies, stacking tiny diapers, and preparing her bedroom. The things in these baskets along with the work of my very thoughtful sister-in-law (to get the baby's "room" ready) have filled that gap so well.

So thank you to you all...you know who you are. For making this mommy feel even more ready for our girl's arrival.

Reason for Hope: Number Two

Number two: Many saints have paved the way and provide encouragement & hope through their testimonies.

Just check out the familiar story of Joni Erickson Tada. Confined to a wheelchair as a quadraplegic at the age of 19 (due to a diving accident), her story is one of endurance that provides hope to many and brings glory to Christ every time she shares her testimony.

She spoke a couple years ago at a Desiring God Conference on suffering; a topic she is well acquainted with. I listened to that talk today and was again reminded of the perseverance it takes to faithfully endure such a physical trial as quadraplegia. I was struck by the thought that, although some would consider my temporary bedrest as a "trial", there is a definite "end" in sight.

I can look forward to a date when this will be done. I can mark days on the calendar and plead with the Lord for the grace to endure. But then, this trial will be over. I will be free from the confines of this hospital room. I will be able to walk again, take care of myself & my family, return to church and resume "normal life". It is a very temporary "trial".

But Joni, she has no end in sight...except heaven. She cannot mark days off the calendar in anticipation for her "trial" to end. She is confined to that wheelchair for life. And she must awaken every day with the challenges that come with her physical disability. I was struck by some of her statements regarding her daily struggles.

She stated (and I paraphrase) that the cross you bear is not the affliction...it is not the suffering...it is your attitude about such things (self-pity, anger, bitterness, unbelief, etc...). We are called to die to these sinful attitudes daily. For then we can grow to be more like Him, to become Holy, to become sin-less. And it is through His power, His peace and His joy that we are able to experience these changes in our sinful souls. And through them, the Lord receives the glory...and others are encouraged in the faith.

If you haven't read her story or ever heard her speak...do so, it will change how you view your current sufferings. It did mine.

Reasons for Hope: Number One

Number one: Nothing can keep us from Christ.
No sufferings and no earthly pain will keep us from eternal life with Him.

"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,whohave been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

As it is written:
"For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
